I got these for my four year old who has the body build of a six year old. Over the summer hes hit a massive growth spurt and burst out of a brand new pair of boots I bought him for the fall (in less than two weeks!). When looking for a pair of boots, I have a set criteria as I know my son is pretty hard on shoes:- Weather-proofI live on the East Coast where we tend to have elemental weather (especially in the Fall and Winter seasons). These boots already passed the test as we recently had some rainy weather and my son thought it was a great idea to jump ankle deep in some muddy water. I was surprised that these boots protected his feet so well and only the tops of his socks were really soaked. The insides were a little damp but not dripping wet.- Easy to Clean W/O DamageI ended up using water and an old rag to clean the boots off. Finished cleaning the pair in less that twenty mins and they dried within an hour. They looked just like new when finished with no damage.- Strong ToeMy son is unforgiving on the toes of ALL his shoes and tends to wear them down as if he's playing soccer with bricks. These boots have meet the challenge with double protection on the toe. So far they've held up nicely without any scuff marks or broken fabric.- Durable SoleMy son is heavy footed and will run down a sole almost as if he's walking on a sander. Again these boots have a fantastic sole; so far so good.My son loves them with not complaint and even call them his "run fast" boots. I definitely would recommend these for your little ones even if your not going hiking in the woods. The ONLY thing keeping these from a five star review is the tongue design. As another reviewer mentioned, the boot is not completely waterproof, as the tongue is not attached to the sides of the shoe - only the front. Therefore, when laced up, water WILL seep through the eyeholes and into the shoe. So do not count on these being waterproof to the degree of, say, keeping the foot dry if submerged past the first set of eyeholes. In other words, the material is definitely waterproof, but the design is not.I bought these for my 11-year-old son for a hiking trip. They do lace up good and tight, though you will likely need to double knot them. He had no trouble breaking them in and then completing a 5.5 mile hike. The hiking profile had several steep elevation changes with rocky footing, and this boot handled it all pretty well. The tread design is interesting but good enough to help my son keep his footing on a variety of surfaces. He says they have good arch support and fit him as well as his sneakers in the same size. They don't seem overly heavy, so these can be worn for prolonged periods. So these are good boots - I wish the tongue design were different to make them completely waterproof, but other than that these boots are quite good. These boots seem to be well made. I bought two for my two boys and they love them. The laces are easy for them to lace and tie (they are in 1st and 2nd grades). They like the tread on the bottom of the shoe that looks like a stream with rocks in it. They are hard on shoes and these seem to be standing up to the abuse they give them. We've only had them a few weeks but they like how comfortable they are and that they keep out the wet when they run through a puddle. Walmart shoes would be half-way through their lifespan for my kids at this point. I did put another coat of waterproof sealant on them a few days ago. It seems like the waterproofing that was on them would have been fine but I used shoe cleaner on them to get some dirt off and wanted to make sure they had a good coat. So far, so good. This is the second pair of these boots for me. I am an adult with small, wide feet with a high arch and need to wear custom orthotic inserts. For some reason, the women's equivalent sized boot was way too narrow. The kids boots are wider and a lot less expensive. So win! I do have to put a shoe widener in these when I get them because I can't seem to find shoes that fit perfectly without a little tweaking. But after a few days with the widener, they fit my feet great and have plenty of room for the orthotic inserts. The first pair wore like iron and lasted a long time. I have periodically sprayed with extra waterproofing and they have stayed dry and comfortable not only hiking, but also standing in mud birdwatching.I found this boot to run quite large. My little boy normally wears an 8, so I went a half size up, it was still too small. I had to return for a 9. My son still says it felt tight around his toes but they will stretch with wear I'm assuming so i think it'll be alright. The boot seems very sturdy, and looks very stylish and cute, but I can't vouche for the waterproof part. My sons loves them, he says they make him 'super fast'...that is his real test of how he likes shoes....how fast he can run in them. So A+ from me on durability and stylishness, A+ from kiddo on being super fast in them.Originally I had ordered these shoes in Black, but because I received 2 right shoes instead of a left and right shoe, I had to send them back. And as luck would have it they did not have another pair in black. Too bad because they fit great. So I got them in brown and once again, as luck would have it, the brown shoes were bigger than the black ones. I kept them, figuring I could add an insole pad to make them fit. Now the shoes slip so bad in the heel, I am sorry I kept them. I have purchased the Timberland boys shoes in the past and found the fit to be pretty good and they have all been comfortable, but this experience has been a bit of a disappointment.I bought this for myself (female) and not for a child. In woman's footwear I am a size 8 which computes out to a size 6 1/2 in mens/boys. The fit is a little on the large size. I bought these last year and never got to use them through any major snow. This year they are getting a workout. They have kept my feet dry. I know these are advertised as a hiking boot but I use them on my feet to shovel snow. They don't keep my feet warm but I guess as a hiking boot they are not meant to. They are a little slippery on ice. All in all I would recommend these and I do like them.A comfortable pair of shoes, very well made of high quality materials and excellent finish.
