An elastic string is on the top so you can tighten them and tie a bow. Without this string, they would flop right off. I recommend tying a knot at both ends of the string so it doesn't slip out of it's tunnel. It feels like real leather on the bottom of the shoe.What I really like about these is that they're cloth so they're easy to wash. My daughter looked adorable in them and they worked well for her ballet class. They were a little large, I may have bought the wrong size, but I was able to tighten the string and they fit fine. She loves them.My daughter won't take them off!These did the trick for my kindergartner's ballet recital and Halloween costume, but that's about all.
