Any trailers aside, this movie focuses on telling a story about a post famous but still alive Billy the Kid, and where Ethan plays the infamous Pat Garret in hot pursuit. The actor Dane DeHaan who plays Billy is totally unknown to me but he puts on quite the convincing performance with an opening scene to his character standing just like the infamous photograph of Billy leaning on a shotgun. The scene is quick, so one has to watch for it.Ethan delivers well as Pat and gives no quarter. The third primary character in this film is another young unknown actor Jake Schur, who becomes the center focus despite the back drop of the two main and very popular characters taking up much of the screentime.Vincent D'Onofrio takes up a primary directing role in this movie with a few acting scenes. His choice to focus the lens through the eyes of the young boy who encounters Billy is quite different. At times I wanted the story to go back to the main characters and to forget about the boy, but it worked out overall.Chris Pratt also makes an appearance here, and as the 'bonus features' mention, he doesn't crack a single smile in the entire bout of scenes he has as the villainous uncle of the young boy. All of these characters are entirely fictional, having no real encounter with Billy or Pat. Chris puts on a really mean uncle, and seeing him in a very non traditional role for him is - unexpected. All in all, for a movie with an inexperienced director but very seasoned actor, it manages to pull itself off quite well, and considering it doesn't focus through the eyes of the main highlight or Billy himself as other movies about him would. After seeing Dane DeHaan play Billy, it's hard to envision anyone else in that role, even the well favored Emilio Estevez from a prior generation in "Young Guns".
